The first meeting of Lafayette Lodge U. D. was held on 24 March 1858 with C. W. Beebee as Worshipful Master and seven other Master Masons in attendance. The charter of Lafayette Lodge No. 16 was granted by the Grand Lodge of Kansas on 18 October 1859. It is not known why the Lodge was named for our distinguished Brother the Marquis de Lafayette, but he was certainly deserving of the honor as a token of respect for the service he gave to the American cause in the Revolutionary War. M:. W:. George S. Green (1883) and M:. W:. Durward C. Danielson (1986) served as Grand Master of Kansas while members of Lafayette Lodge. M:. W:. John C. Postlethwaite was raised as a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge, but he was a member of Jewell Lodge No. 11 when he served as Grand Master of Kansas in 1890. Lafayette Lodge has had many distinguished and dedicated members, including a number of men associated with Kansas State University in various capacities. W:. Washington Marlatt, one of the founders of Bluemont College, the forerunner of KSU, was Master of Lafayette Lodge in 1860. W:. Ralph R. Dykstra, who served as Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at KSU, was Master of Lafayette Lodge in 1921.
At the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Kansas in March 2008, Lafayette Lodge received a Master’s Achievement Award and a Re-Lighting the Torch Award. Lafayette Lodge is the 2008 State Champion for the Eureka Challenge.
